- T'Pring is stationed at the Ankeshtan K'til Retreat, a Vulcan criminal rehabilitation center on the third moon of Omicron Lyrae.
- The Serene Squall is a pirate vessel that preys on the colonists and the aid ships.
- Dr. Aspen used to be a Starfleet counselor, stationed on Starbase 12, but resigned to help colonists on the frontier. However, Dr. Aspen is actually Captain Angel of The Serene Squall pretending to be Dr. Aspen, who was left marooned on an uninhabited planet. Angel wants T'Pring to release their lover from the Ankeshtan K'til prison, a Vulcan named Xaverius.
- Pike captures The Serene Squall and its crew, but Angel escapes.
- Based on what Angel told him, Spock deduces Xaverius is actually his half-brother Sybok. Sarek had Sybok out of wedlock, and told Spock to avoid him at all costs because Sybok is v'tosh ka'tur, a Vulcan who does not embrace logic (a concept introduced in the Enterprise episode "Fusion").
- The episode ends with T'Pring and Stonn looking upon Sybok in his cell. (His face is not shown and the role is uncredited.)
- Sybok was introduced in the motion picture Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
- This episode also re-introduces Stonn, who will ultimately marry T'Pring in "Amok Time".
- Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura) and Bruce Horak (Hemmer) do not appear in this episode (and are not credited in the opening titles).
