A Starfleet Warp and Impulse propulsion specialist.Carey was posted to the U.S.S. Voyager as the assistant chief engineer in 2371. When Voyager's chief engineer died when the starship was pulled to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker, he became Voyager's Acting Chief Engineer. Captain Janeway later promted Maquis crew member B'Elanna Torres to Chief Engineer, much to Carey's disappointment. After some initial friction, B'Elanna and Carey eventually became friends.
He has a wife, Dina, and two sons, Josh and John. He enjoys kayaking and Parrises squares. He was on the Parrises square team at the Academy.
