Michael Burnham was born in 2226 to human parents, Michael and Gabrielle Burnham. They were killed during a Klingon raid on Doctari Alpha, and Burnham was subsequently raised by the Vulcan Ambassador Sarek and his human wife Amanda on Vulcan, where she later studied at the Vulcan Science Academy.After she was denied entrance to the Vulcan Expeditionary Group, Burnham joined Starfleet and she served aboard the U.S.S. Shenzhou NCC-1227 under Captain Philippa Georgiou.
In 2256, the U.S.S. Shenzhou encountered a Klingon vessel cloaked near a disabled Federation relay in a binary star system. Convinced they needed to fire upon the Klingons to avoid being destroyed, she incapacitated Captain Georgiou. The U.S.S. Shenzhou was lost at what ultimately became known as the Battle at the Binary Stars — and the start of the Federation/Klingon war.
Michael Burnham was court martialed and sentenced to prison.
She had served six months in prison and was in transit to a facility on Tellun when her shuttle was disabled. She was rescued by the U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031 under the command of Captain Gabriel Lorca. Wanting a tactical advantage in the war with the Klingons, Captain Lorca recruited Burnham and she was assigned as a science specialist on the U.S.S. Discovery.
In 2257, she was awarded the Starfleet Medal of Honor for helping to end the Federation/Klingon war. Her rank of Commander restored and her mutiny conviction was removed from her service record.
In 3189, aided in retaking U.S.S. Discovery from the Emerald Chain's minister Osyraa.
After helping to discover the origin of The Burn and defeating the Emerald Chain, Burnham was promoted to Captain, assigned as commanding officer of U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031-A.
