- The Daedalus-class U.S.S. Essex NCC-173 was reported missing in 2167. Its crew complement was 229. The commanding officer was Capt. Bryce Shumar, first officer Cmdr. Steven Mullen, security officer Lt. Morgan Kelly. The last Daedalus-class starship was decommissioned in 2196.
- Troi claims that the Essex was caught in an electro-magnetic storm and was ripped apart. The crew's consciousness was absorbed into the planet's magnetic currents. They are actually prisoners from Ux-Mal who were separated from their bodies 500 years ago and left on the moon, serving as a penal colony. They previously tried to escape on the Essex, but it could not escape the planet's storms.
- O'Brien beams down to the surface with transporter pattern enhancers. The 3 pattern enhancers are placed in a triangle pattern 7 meters apart and are activated. They allow the ship's transporters to lock onto the away team through the interference.
- The same twin babies that play Molly O'Brien in this episode also played the newborn Molly in "Disaster".
