A quantum filament hits the Enterprise, completely disabling it and trapping the various crew members in different areas. Keiko goes into labor in Ten Forward, assisted by Worf. Picard and three children are trapped in a turbolift. Dr. Crusher and La Forge are trapped by a radioactive plasma fire in the cargo bay. Riker and Data crawl through the Jeffries tubes to engineering. Counselor Troi takes command of the bridge.

• Lt. Monroe was in charge of the bridge at the time of the accident; she was killed and Troi became senior officer on the bridge. She has the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
  
• When Data's body is electrocuted, he has Riker remove his head and take it to Engineering, where he links the head to the computer.
  
• Jana Marie Hupp is credited as Ensign Monroe, though O'Brien referred to her as Lt. Monroe. Jana Marie Hupp previously played Ensign Pavlik in the episode "Galaxy's Child".
