- This episode was adapted by Larry Niven from his own short story "The Soft Weapon".
- The Slavers were a race that ruled the galaxy a billion years ago. During the Slaver Wars, a revolt led to their extermination.
- Captain Kirk does not appear in this episode, nor does Dr. McCoy. This is the only episode of TOS or TAS where Kirk does not appear.
- This is the only Star Trek episode that does not have any scenes that take place on the Enterprise.
- Sulu notes the Kzinti have had four wars with Humans, the last 200 years prior. (This does not fit with the timeline established by canon.)
