- Pike has a party in his quarters to celebrate the end of training rotation for Cadets Uhura and Chia, as well as Ensign Duke's promotion to Lieutenant.
- The U.S.S. Enterprise is currently on its way to deliver vidium power cells to Deep Space Station K-7, while the landing party responds to the U.S.S. Peregrine's distress signal on Valeo Beta V.
- The U.S.S. Peregrine NCC-1549 is a Sombra-class starship, commanded by Captain Alice Gavin.
- The Peregrine rescued three survivors, a human girl, an Orion and an alien nicknamed "Buckley". The Orion was infected with Gorn eggs. The hatchlings exploded from the Orion's body and killed the crew of the Peregrine.
- Buckley was also infected. Cadet Chia and Lieutenant Duke are killed by the hatchlings.
- Hemmer pushes Uhura out of the way and is sprayed by a hatchling and infected with its eggs. Before they hatch, he leaves the ship and throws himself over a cliff.
- The baby Gorn were physical puppets, and CGI effects were used to remove the rods and puppeteers.
- Deep Space Station K-7 was first seen in the classic episode "The Trouble with Tribbles".
