La'an Noonien-Singh served as the security chief of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 under Captain Christopher Pike.Her parents were Sa'an and Ronu Noonien-Singh, and she had a brother named Manu. She grew up on the colony ship S.S. Puget Sound, until colony ship was captured by the Gorn. The colonists were left on a Gorn planetary nursery.
La'an was the only survivor. Her escape raft was found by the Federation starship U.S.S. M. L. King Jr. She credits then-Ensign Una Chin-Riley who served on the King for saving her life.
Una Chin-Riley sponsored La'an's application to Starfleet Academy.
While La'an is an descendent of genetically enhanced tyrant Khan Noonien-Singh, she is not an augment.
