- The U.S.S. Enterprise returns to Rigel VII where a survey mission five years prior ended badly, with the death of 3 crewmen, including his assistant, Yeoman Zac Nguyen. Spock was critically injured in an attack by the Kalar and the away team was emergency evacuated after only four hours.
- The Rigel VII mission and the loss of Pike's then unnamed yeoman were plot points in the original series unaired pilot "The Cage".
- They find Zac alive amongst the Kalar, where he has become their leader. He hadn't been killed, but left behind when the away team evacuated. He blames Pike for not even checking if he was really dead.
- The Kalar are divided into two groups. The Palace Kalar rule, while the Field Kalar do all of the work and lose their memories every night.
- Zac reveals the Palace Kalar's memories are protected from the radiation because of the ore used in the palace's construction and also the guard's helmets.
- Captain Batel was up for a promotion to commodore, but it was sabotaged by Admiral Pasalk. Pike and Batel break up at the beginning of the episode, but Pike's feelings for her help him to remember and they get back together at the end. (We still don't know her first name; Pike only refers to her as Captain Batel.)
