- The Gorn were introduced in the classic episode "Arena".
- La'an tells Pike it's the Gorn that is attacking them, though they are never seen and have no communication with Enterprise.
- It is Starfleet Remembrance Day, and many of the crew wear a pin commemorating a past Starfleet ship. Pike wears a U.S.S. Discovery pin. La'an has an S.S. Pugent Sound pin, but doesn't wear it and leaves it in her quarters.
- Spock mind melds with La'an to help her remember the Gorn attack when she was young. The Gorn are not shown, only heard. During the mind meld, La'an discovers Spock has a sister, a fact not included in his Starfleet record.
- Seven crew members lost their lives in the battle.
- "Memento Mori" is a Latin phrase translated as "remember you die" or "remember death".
